A new radio frequency authorized by the U.S. Department of Defense could interfere with garage door openers for residents who live near the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station.
Enterprise Land Mobile Radio is now being used at most U.S. military installations, including the Weapons Station, to meet the DOD's communication needs and in response to limited bandwidth available because of wireless networks.
The frequency has been reserved for military use for years but hasn't been used much, base officials reported.
Radio-controlled garage door openers may be affected by the frequency and are required by federal law to accept the interference because most are unlicensed devices, the base reported. in some cases, the openers will be overpowered by the ELMR signal and will stop working.
Base officers cannot modify the frequency to stop interference with residents' garage door openers; however, some manufacturers will offer replacements. Affected residents should contact their garage door manufacturer.
