With the cuts to the BBC World service announced earlier this year, with 650 jobs to go and five foreign-language services axed, it is good to see it continuing to do new and important work as the launch of World Service content on FM radio in the Libyan cities of Benghazi and Misrata is announced.
The launch comes after the Foreign Secretary, William Hague, promised £2.2m in funding in June to shore up the corporation’s Arabic Service. his announcement is best remembered for the Foreign Office’s own website initially headlined the announcement: “Massive U-turn on BBC World Service funding”.
Hague said: “It is right that we should look at ways in which we can assist the BBC Arabic Service to continue their valuable work in the region. I have agreed that we will provide additional funding of £2.2m per annum to enable the World Service to maintain the current level of investment,” the BBC reproted at the time.
The new radio service is in addition to BBC Arabic which already operates on Libyan television and on short- and medium-wave radio. More from the BBC on the Libyan announcement.
