Country station WUBE-FM, the city’s consistent #2 station, woke up new Year’s Day with new competition. Cumulus flipped FM 94.1 from the “Journey” adult contemporary format to country to “94.1 Great Country, The 90s to now.”

The station had been a non-factor in ratings here since the days of “WINK” radio, going through changes to MIX94.1, WNNF-FM, “Radio 94.1,” “The Frequency,” and since may, ”Journey 94.1,” promising a “musical journey to the ’80s, ’90s and now.”

So the Cumulus cluster here (WARM98, 96 ROCK and classic rock FOX 92.5) switched 94.1 to country to steal some listeners from #2 B105, owned by Hubbard.  B105 has been the only station to challenge #1 WLW-AM in recent years, tying WLW-AM  (with a 9.7 share) for first in June. By comparison, 94.1 in November ranked #18 with a 1.8 audience share — behind public stations WVXU-FM and WGUC-FM, ESPN WCKY-AM and Christian WAKW-FM.  The station launched the format Sunday with 10,000 songs in  a row, with no on-air staff or commercials, and nothing but a billboard on the web site.

Can the new country station take enough listeners from B105 to let Cumulus’ WGRR-FM jump from #3 to #2? will sister Cumulus station WARM98 gain listeners by subtraction (of Journey)? how will the new country competition shake up the ratings among the four big ownership groups (Clear Channel, Hubbard, Cumulus, Radio One)? Will Hubbard drop country on sister station WYGY-FM to go after one of the Cumulus stations?
