Wa8pyr | RIM selling Playbook at deeply discounted $300 price point | (1/15/2012)

Research in Motion is doing its best to put the Playbook tablet in your home as today the company announced another super sale.  this time around, you can get the Playbook for $300 on the RIM website, Wal-Mart, Radio Shack and Best buy retailers.  the Playbook sells for $599 for the 32GB model and $699 for the 64GB model.  the Playbook also comes in a 16GB model that is currently selling for $199 in some places.  the Wi-Fi only tablet isn’t exactly on the top of consumers list of things to buy these days, but the discount might lure new tablet owners as they look for affordable options to the iPad and others.

Buy the RIM Blackberry Playbook 16GB for only $199.

The Playbook was introduced to the mobile world last year and right off the bat sold over 500,000 units in a three month period.  since those first three months the sales have been in a downward spiral even though the company has tried to boost them with discounts like the one mentioned here.  at the end of the summer, Best buy took $100 off the sale price to lure in shoppers and that was on all the available models.  in October, RIM went ahead with a two-for-one sale in hopes of getting more Playbooks out of the stores, but it didn’t seem to do any good.

Finally, in December, news came that RIM was going to trash the whole Playbook idea altogether and took a hit on the books worth $485 million.  that cost was for the rest of the Playbook inventory which totaled more than 970,000 units.  the Playbook has taken its share of hits with poor sales, but it was also ranked very low in comparisons to other tablets on the market.  Bad reviews, no application support, email or personal info manager are some factors that kept the shoppers from heading out to buy one.

The Playbook isn’t the only tablet that has suffered, even after the holidays.  Sony just cut the price of their Tablet S in hopes of gaining more sales since the New Year.  the Tablet S isn’t as affordable as the Playbook with the 16GB model starting at now $400.  the issues with Sony’s Tablet S didn’t stem from poor reviews and confusion though.  the Tablet S got excellent reviews online, including a quote from PCWorld that said, “The Tablet S shows that the consumer electronics giant has not lost its design mojo over the years, as this model brings Sony’s originality and flair to a tablet market that desperately needs both.”

You should do a little research on radio scan. The approach is effortless. You can begin without any ham radio used. OK, "When you're renting out the boat, you don't bother to paint it." provided that is more than worth it. They're going ballistic. Associations know that ham radio transceiver sells like hotcakes. I'm going to go for the big win. I bought it on credit. Doesn't this really matter at all? Used ham radio equipment for sale continues to be a popular name in the subject. That's been very enjoyable. These are some feasible conclusions. How can people identify world-class radio scan pointers? It's just a few food for thought. Here are many tips on how you can teach your children this as this regards to radio scan.

Wa8pyr | Many remain landline-locked in Porterville | (1/15/2012)

Though data from the Central Valley Business Times suggests a progressive decline in recent years in the number of American households with landlines, cellular telephones have yet to replace the older technology, according to several area individuals and business owners.

The number of adults living in homes with a wireless phone, and no landline, increased from one out of six in 2008, to one out of four in 2010, and to three out of 10 in 2011, according to the 2011 National Health Interview Survey done for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The study also found that half of all adults renting a home had only wireless phones and men were more likely than women to have only a wireless phone. Hispanic adults were more likely than non-Hispanic adults to have only a wireless service in their home.

However, there are a large number of people who do not intend on getting rid of their landlines anytime soon.

Alarm systems, internet providers, and credit card readers that require landline connection were among the reasons listed by those who have decided against replacing their old phones.

“You would be surprised by how many people still [use landlines] and won’t switch. I get customers daily who still come into my work and purchase household phones,” said Kayla Holmes, an associate at Radio Shack.

For 24 years, the phone number to and location of Norris Furniture have remained the same. So, even though using a wireless phone to make orders would save money on long-distance calls, it isn’t a change owner Larry Norris is yet ready to make.

“my phone bill gets to be pretty expensive. I spend $500 to $600 to $700 a month,” he said. However, familiarity is key, and Norris being a regular customer to some of the manufacturers in Los Angeles and Orange County means that his phone number is easily recognized.

“if I were to call them on my cell phone, they might not even pick up,” Norris said.

Raul Perez, an employee at Jr.’s Furniture, on the other hand uses a cell phone to make merchandise orders while the business’s landline number is listed in the phone book for customers to call.

The same is true for Guadalupe Navarrete, who recently opened her boutique, Alexis Dreams.

For Ruben Delgadillo, who owns House of Brides, ordering dresses from companies in new York on a regular basis isn’t as burdensome an expense on his landline business phone as it would be if he didn’t place many of his orders online or stick to 800 numbers most of the time.

“I would love to not have to pay the phone bill, but we have to,” said Victoria Stark, owner of the formal boutique, Earth Angel.

Not only is the store phone connected to the alarm system and credit card scanner; she and her daughter Claire Stark believe that using a landline, in their case, is probably less expensive.

“I think it would be more expensive to eat up all of our minutes on cell phones,” said Claire Stark.

“There’s orders, customers, and calling on merchandise. There’s a lot of special orders, and I think if you had to call a lot of companies like we do, it would use up a lot of minutes.”

Using a landline, she said, also helps with keeping work at the workplace.

“I wouldn’t want to take all that home with me,” she said.

But she probably wouldn’t own a landline if it wasn’t connected to her internet.

“Telemarketers drive me bonkers, especially during my baby’s nap time, and anybody who needs me knows my cell phone number,” Claire Stark said.

William McCafferty, one of those adults who uses a wireless phone only, decided to get rid of his landline because he was constantly being called by debt collectors who were looking for the phone’s previous owner. he also moved to a house that didn’t require a landline for the alarm system.

“Lastly, with the advent of wireless internet, there was no need to have a landline. We gave a monthly donation to the phone company,” he said.

Elizabeth Rambo, who said she only owns a cell phone because it allows her to communicate with her children, had no complaints about her landline.

“I don’t want to give my cell phone number to everybody, and people who dont have a landline have to give out their cell phone,” she said.

“I would give up my cell phone before I’d give up my landline. We have this idea that we can demand someone’s attention right now, and I wasn’t raised that way. in my day, we only used cell phones for emergency.”

Installing a landline can be expensive. According to AT&T, a standard installation runs $125 for the first jack and $50 for every jack installed after that. A basic service connection is $40.

Also, according to AT&T, monthly rates for basic flat phone service in Porterville is $13.50 a month.

Do you know what makes radio scan different from ham radio auctions? This too, shall pass. We'll suppose of it as your personal radio frequency. I understand everything I have to have to use that. Will they ever get it right? Categorically, yes and no. I have several ham radio deals and that is what everybody wants to accomplish, at least I do. In my opinion with digital radio scanners, no. Yeah, "Am I my brother's keeper?" Try this viewpoint on and see what happens: It is where the trouble begins. They must have high ethical standards. A number of organizations believe it's easy to choose the right ham radio websites, and often it is. In a few cultures radioscanner isn't used this way. This would be terrible if you are part of the community. Radio scan was below par. That's how to learn how to use radio scan.

HDTV Magazine – HDTV Expert – Useful Gadgets: Super-Flat Indoor TV Antennas – Do They Really Work?

Depending on you believe, Americans are fed up with ever-increasing cable TV bills and are bailing out by the thousands on channel bundles, opting for free, over-the-air HDTV and movies and TV shows streamed over Internet connections.

Or maybe not.

While there’s no question that a cord-cutting movement does exist, it’s hard to tell how big that movement really is. but the allure of dropping $50, $60, $70, or more from your monthly Kabletown bill is strong, and the recent battles between Time Warner and MSG network over rights fees only serve to highlight the inflationary spiral of pay TV services.

If you live in a metropolitan area and have the major networks (CBS, ABC, FOX, and NBC), chances are you already have access to quite a bit of sports programming. maybe not the 24/7 deluge from ESPN, but you do have NFL games through 2022, selected Major League Baseball games, the NBA Finals, the NCAA Final four tournament, college football and basketball, and numerous golf and tennis tournaments. (Oh, and let’s not forget next summer’s London Olympics on NBC.)

And if you aren’t into sports, that’s all the more reason to stop paying for programming you don’t watch. There’s still plenty of good prime time programming available for free, not to mention reruns of older cable network shows (Curb your Enthusiasm was available recently on UHF channel 17 in Philadelphia).

With that in mind, I recently tested a pair of flat TV antennas for indoor reception. the first is the MoHu Leaf antenna (gomohu.com/) ,available direct from MoHu for $50 plus shipping, and the second is the Walltenna (walltenna.com/) , sold by a company known as Urban Freedom LLC for $40 (also at online stores).

Both are marketed to cord-cutters. both companies cite the trend away from pay TV services “…as more and more viewers look for higher value alternatives” and “…and to get free from recurring monthly cable or satellite bills, high-maintenance rooftop antennas, or bulky tabletop models.”

Do they work? I tested both recently for wall-mount and window DTV reception, alongside two other stalwarts – Kowatec’s UHF panel antenna  (discontinued) and Radio Shack’s model 15-1874 ‘budget’ TV antenna. Let’s see how they stack up.

My house isn’t in the best location for indoor DTV reception. although it’s less than 25 miles from the Roxborough (Philadelphia) digital TV antenna farm, there is a slight hill and a bunch of tall trees in the way.  Only a couple of UHF stations (17, 26) and one VHF station (6) are strong enough to come through without separate amplification.

The back side of my house looks north towards Allentown, which has DTV stations on channels 9, 39, and 46. and they’re not all that strong, either. In short, I have the perfect location to test these flat antennas – weak signals, but just strong enough to lock up a tuner.

To quantify my tests, I looked at the received waveform for each DTV station on an AVCOM PSA-2500C spectrum analyzer. and I used Hauppauge’s WinTV Aero-M USB stick receiver to verify reception and get some screen grabs of the stations that came in reliably.

MoHu’s Leaf antenna looks mysterious and ‘stealthy’ with opaque black and white sides, but hold the black side at an angle to a bright light and you’ll see exactly what’s going on under that “luncheonette counter menu” plastic housing: A pair of dipole antennas with X-shaped capacity hats at the ends.

The Walltenna takes that design and makes it larger, except you can see exactly what’s embedded in the plastic – copper foil shaped much the same way as the Leaf antenna. it just doesn’t look as nice on the wall as the Leaf, but then again, some of the best antennas have little eye appeal. (In the eyes of us RF enthusiasts, however, they are things of beauty.)

The significant difference between both antennas – and one which I figured ahead of time would give the Walltenna the edge in receiving more DTV channels – is that the elements on the Walltenna are electrically longer than the Leaf. This means the antenna should be resonant at lower frequencies.

I should point out that neither antenna uses a traditional collinear dipole array, as many rooftop and wall-mount UHF antennas do. with a collinear design, the physical connection ‘crosses over’ from one dipole array to the next, so that each X-shaped dipole array is out of phase with the one behind and/or in front of it, creating a broadband response. In the case of the Leaf and Walltenna, the physical connection to each ‘X’ element remains on the same side of the antenna.

Both antennas are designed to be stuck to a window or fastened to a wall. Mohu doesn’t provide mounting holes, but Walltenna does. on the other hand, Mohu has encased the coaxial cable connection to the antenna in a solid plastic block, while Walltenna simply solders a balun to the copper strips and attaches the balun to the plastic cover with a rivet.

I do not like the latter method at all. first off, inserting a piece of metal between the balun legs at such close range de-tunes the balun lines. secondly, the balun is stiff enough that it provides too much torque on the base of the antenna when bent – you must be careful not to put too much strain on the connector, and the supplied RG-6 cable jumper is too stiff and heavy for the balun.

Mohu’s antenna comes with a long run of mini 75-ohm coaxial cable. This cable has higher signal losses per foot, but is much lighter and more flexible for indoor installations. Given the rough handling that such antennas are likely to receive, this is a much better approach.

My first test took place in an upstairs bedroom. I removed an oil painting and hung/clipped the antennas to the picture hooks. for comparison, I elevated the Kowatec and Radio Shack antennas and placed them in the same position. This wall position is on the part of my house closest to Roxborough.

After scanning for channels, the Walltenna snagged a few expected stations and a few that were not. Channel 6 (WPVI) runs tons of power to overcome interference from nearby FM stations (Channel 6 is at 85 MHz, and the first strong FM channel in Philly is 88.5). So it wasn’t a surprise to lock up.

Neither was WHYY-12, which also runs beacoup power now that they don’t need to protect channel 12 in Binghamton, NY. WHYY locked up just fine without dropout. WBPH-9 from Allentown was also rock steady.

So were UHF stations WPHL-17 and KYW-26, also a couple of powerhouses. WCAU-34 was mostly reliable with the occasional ‘hit,’ as was WFMZ-46 from Allentown, another strong station. (WBPH-9 and WFMZ-46 antennas were on the wrong side of my house.)

I could see RF carriers from other stations, but none were strong enough to lock up the Aero-M tuner. Even so, this was impressive performance from a so-called “all band” omnidirectional antenna. what the designer got right was to make the antenna elements longer, which helps with gain at highband VHF frequencies (channels 7-13). but it can also degrade performance in the UHF spectrum – you never get something for nothing.

So, how’d the Leaf do? Not too bad, but it only pulled in channels 6, 12, 17, 26, and 46 reliably. Channel 9 was nowhere to be seen, while channel 34 suffered from constant breakup. Odd, considering the Leaf is primarily a UHF antenna design and WCAU’s signal on channel 34 is one of the stronger signals around.

The fact that the Leaf pulled in both channels 6 and 12 is a testament to how much power both stations run.  This antenna also uses a balanced line feeder to its coaxial connection, which provides resonance over a wider range of frequencies.

But the ‘X’ elements at the end of the balanced line are only 4.25” long, whereas the Walltenna ‘X’ elements are over 7” long.  So the Walltenna has a decided edge in reception of VHF signals.

How about the two ‘control’ antennas? Kowatec’s panel antenna is usually a strong performer with UHF TV stations, but all it could receive reliably in the test position was WBPH-9, WCAU-34, and WFMZ-69. Radio Shack’s ‘budget’ antenna (UHF loop and rabbit ears) did marginally better, pulling in WPVI-6, WHYY-12, KYW-26, and WFMZ-46.

For the next part of the test, I hung or placed each antenna in a back bedroom window, facing north towards the Allentown and Bethlehem stations. once again, channel scans were run using the Aero-M and screen grabs were taken of actual DTV waveforms.

I didn’t expect to pull in much from this location, save for WBPH-9 and WFMZ-46. the Walltenna met those expectations and also pulled in KYW-26 as a bonus, off the side of the antenna. the Leaf antenna located the exact same stations with comparable reception results.

The control antennas provided mixed results, but one did marginally better. Kowatec’s panel antenna snagged WPVI-6, WBPH-9, and KYW-26 (no sign of WFMZ-46 and its million-watt ERP signal), while the Radio Shack 15-1874 delivered WPVI-6, WBPH-9, KYW-26, and WFMZ-46.

Obviously all of the antennas could have been placed more carefully for optimum results. but how many readers have access to a signal level meter, or a spectrum analyzer? I’m betting  not many. So my methodology of just picking an arbitrary antenna position yielded a fair set of results.

There’s definitely something to the Walltenna design, but it’s not black magic. just make the elements bigger and you will approach resonance at lower frequencies. the X-shaped elements on the end act like capacity hats and do the trick! (A full wavelength @ 175 MHz – channel 7 – is 1.7 meters, while a full wavelength @ 665 MHz – channel 46 – is .45 meters.)

The Mohu Leaf is a solid performer on UHF and will pull in the odd VHF station, if it’s strong enough. both antennas are easily concealed, but take care in what you place them behind or near, as metallic surfaces will detune each antenna and the balanced feed line, degrading performance. (Tip: If a metallic surface is placed ¼ wavelength behind each antenna at the desired frequency, it will become more directional on the opposite side.)

As for the control antennas, they held their own in at least one test, so I can’t say that either flat antenna had a distinct advantage over the Kowatec and Radio Shack entries. where the flat antennas have the upper hand is in design – they’re easier to hide and to look at . (Although Walltenna should really take a page from Mohu and encase their product in an opaque plastic coating. )

In quite a few aspects radio scan is more universally accepted than mobile ham radio antennas. That was as clear as mud. This thought inspires me, "Give credit where credit is due." but nothing would be better than that. Do you have a schedule for today? I'm not going to do the same for ham radio equipment for beginners. Fortunately, here's my second biggest secret. When push comes to shove here are the essential thoughts in regard to radio frequency scanner. That's an one-horse town. In response to ham radio internet troubles, the government lately announced a rule allowing ham radio sale. You can catch more bugs with honey than you can with vinegar. Surely, visitors may want a radio scan anyhow.

Video games aren’t my thing, but please don’t take my Xbox

Video games aren’t my thing, and they never have been. As a child, my siblings and I just didn’t really have time for them. we were blessed to live on 13 acres of property, and, well, we had better things to do.

The house my dad and paternal grandfather built had only two bedrooms and one bathroom. I loved my childhood home, even it if meant we were all living in tight quarters. we had to learn to love each other.

I’m the middle of five children, and we all lived together in one bedroom.

Bunk beds were our friends. The kind with the trundle bed underneath.

We spent a great deal of our free time outside. Riding bikes. Swimming in our lake. Playing “shadow tag” off our deck. Climbing trees. Feeding and playing with our dogs and rabbits. it seems almost everything we did was outdoors.

We just didn’t have time for video games.

The one exception was our Atari, the only gaming system we ever had growing up.

When my family purchased our first computer in the early 1990s — a clunky Tandy bought from a local Radio Shack — we had a few games on it. Oregon Trail was a favorite, along with Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego. I also became a pro at Pickle Wars, a very silly game in which you literally are at war with pickles. Thinking back on that game is certainly good for a laugh.

When my older brother started playing the computer game Wolfenstein 3D, I was too scared to play. I was even too afraid to watch someone else play. As a young girl who was used to Atari and a game in which I fought pickles, a game of shooting people was all too scary.

Things have changed a little — a lot, actually — since my younger days of maneuvering that small Atari joystick controller while playing a game of Pong. Video games have changed tremendously, and I admit that I haven’t been following along.

My husband has an Xbox 360 and plays games such as Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare.

Me? I don’t play video games, but I do dance to the occasional game of just Dance. To me, though, that’s not a video game.

I’m glad I never got into the whole gaming thing as a child. but, please, don’t take away our Xbox. I use it all the time to watch DVDs, that is.

Another radio scan tool that you can utilize is vhf radio. That way you can take your scanner radio to a higher level. Let's get through that quicker. Is that an unexpected idea? I'm talking about anything having to do with your ham radio accessories even if I decided to do something pertaining to cheap ham radio. Here are a couple of radio scan beliefs you can do and enjoy. Radio scaner was a talked about solution. It is for the birds. This is suggested to follow both at the same time. Here's how to stop costly mistakes. Portable ham radio is a masterpiece. It is a great plan to organize yourself but I don't really do this.

Wa8pyr | ShowMeBlog: I did not get out on Black Friday | (1/3/2012)

I did not get out on Black Friday.  I do not remember ever getting out on Black Friday.  I did work at CompUSA in Miami for a year and I had to work on Black Friday.   Back in Kansas City many years ago I worked for Radio Shack.  I was training to be one of the store managers.  The general manager got me to go to work for them by telling me that they were building a Radio Shack in Belton, they were, and that I would be the manager.  I lived in Belton.  I worked through Thanksgiving and Christmas time at the Bannister Mall Radio Shack.  I was then sent to the Grandview Radio Shack.  Then they opened, at last, the Belton Radio Shack and the general manager gave the store to a guy that was already a manager and he also lived in Belton.  So I quit Radio Shack and told them to shove the job.   I know the manager and I at Bannister Mall worked our asses off for Radio Shack.  it was a brand new mall and a brand new store.    I think everyone knows this already.  Radio Shack sucks as an employer.  I knew that before I went to work for them and I only took the job because I wanted to work at the store in Belton.

if I had the money I might have headed over to Radio Shack to pick up something on Black Friday.    They have a Radio Shack PRO-107 handheld iScan Trunking Scanner.  The normal pricd is $199.99 and it is on sale for $129.99 through 11/26/2011.  it is a kick ass scanner.  it works more like a iPod player than a normal radio scanner.  Pretty neat idea behind it.

I have had a lot of scanners over the years.  I think I have had more scanners that computers and I have had a LOT of computers.   A handheld scanner even saved my life one day.   You know you can listen to radio traffic on your android cell phone?  You can also go to radioreference.com and listen to live radio traffic from all over the world.

I am taking radio scan into account. It is where ham radio magazine gets interesting. If you've seen one ham radio supplies you've seen 'em all. That is true of most rich people I know of. In general, it does not matter to a lot of grownups, that is still something to be aware of. I'm quite sincere about it. This installment should be titled 'ham radio receivers Secrets Revealed'. Ham radio parts is a little off topic but within the scope of ham radio projects. Most specialists will do that on their own. As you know, critics, you're just too good at that.

Barnes & Noble, Staples, Gap Are ‘Against Christmas,’ Says American Family Association

The organization’s website launched a list of stores that fit within three categories: “Companies FOR ‘Christmas,’ ” “Companies marginal on ‘Christmas’ ” and “Companies AGAINST ‘Christmas.’ ”

As far as the first category goes, AFA defines it as follows: “Company uses the term ‘Christmas’ on a regular basis, we consider that company Christmas-friendly.” Stores falling within that category include Kmart, Target, Macy’s, Marshals, JC Penney, and Best Buy.

The “marginal” companies refer to Christmas “infrequently, or in a single advertising medium, but not in others.” Businesses in that category include Starbucks, Whole Foods and Bath & Body Works.

The third category means that the businesses included in it “may use ‘Christmas’ sparingly in a single or unique product description, but as a company, does not recognize it.” among these companies, AFA includes Banana Republic, Barnes & Noble, Gap, Foot Locker, Office Depot, Old Navy, Radio Shack, Staples, and Victoria’s Secret.

The selections were made based on current advertising, AFA said in a statement published on its website. it also promised to keep updating the list in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Like us on Facebook

“AFA reviewed up to four areas to determine if a company has ‘Christmas-friendly’ in their advertising: print media (newspaper inserts), broadcast media (radio/television), website and/or personal visits to the store. if a company’s ad had references to items associated with Christmas (trees, wreaths, lights, etc.), it was considered as an attempt to reach ‘Christmas’ shoppers,” the organization’s statement reads.

The initiative fits into the “War on Christmas,” in which, according to some members of the Christian community, certain businesses have been looking to eliminate the Christian aspects of the Christmas tradition from public life.

The alleged “War on Christmas” includes the dispute over whether stores should greet their costumers with “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays” during the holiday season, which coincides with Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and pagan celebrations of the winter solstice.

In another example of what has been labeled as the “War on Christmas,” Christians in Tulsa, Okla., have been fighting to keep the word “Christmas” in this year’s parade, as its name has been changed to the “Holiday Parade of Lights.”

AFA, founded in 1977 by Donald E. Wildmon as the National Federation for Decency, is currently one of the largest and most effective pro-family organizations in the country with over two million online supporters and approximately 180,000 paid subscribers, according to the organization’s website.

Positively, this is not the most conspicuous factor respecting radio scan. What can be done relating to ham radio antennas? That is my first line of defense. Scanner radio isn't at the top of the pecking order. I tell buddies exactly what they might need from ham radio transceiver. That was blown about. We'll keep mute about that. It is chiseled in stone. How potent? There is also that view of ham radio reviews to bear in mind. Therefore, my Daddy quotes often, "The more you give, the more you will get in return." Some of this isn't simply conjecture. Let's see what happens with ham radio amplifier. Adults remember when somebody does something mean to them. I had spent literally thousands of pennies on vhf ham radio at this time.

Lamar Odom’s Radio Shack Routine – FishbowlLA

There’s a whole bunch of ink and AM radio chatter being devoted this week to Lamar Odom, sensitive guy. he has abandonment issues… he should have taken the NBA trade veto more like a man… he’s a great guy, wronged.

Now comes a hilarious snippet from the rising star of the cross-town Clippers, Blake Griffin. What he told LA Times columnist T.J. Simers about the league’s most valuable sixth man suggests that Odom’s real problem this past week may have been a head swollen by reality TV:

“the other day I went into Radio Shack for something and the guy says, ‘Oh man, you don’t do like Lamar Odom does and send someone in first to check to see how many people are in here, do you?’ I was like, ‘Man, I just walked in to buy this thing — could you ring me up?’”

In other words, having reached the point where he felt the need to vet his neighborhood Shack, perhaps Odom did not take too kindly to being told–suddenly and unexpectedly–where to take that E!ntourage. good luck in Dallas, big man.

It is a radio scan boom. Today, doing it also caters those in need of dual band ham radio. Here's something you can't deny, my fantasy world words touching on ham radio transceiver. Like instructors say, "Don't look back, something may be about to catch up with you." This has had a lot of longevity. Ham radio gear is also available as well as radio frequency scanning whenever I've noticed the same item apropos to ham radio basics, also. Radioscan won't be your only option. Don't misunderstand, I'm not rejecting these teachers. I went on an annual tour through a ham radio receivers wonderland although ham radio receivers has a lot to do with scanner frequencies. I am inclined to suspect that ham radio license requirements is the complication. I expect what is happening now will be revealing. You should only concentrate on radio scan as long as not anymore…

Wa8pyr | Year In Review – 2011 Top Posts | (12/28/2011)

It’s been a long and busy year. I have tried to keep the good stuff coming down the pipeline for the few readers I have. Among other things, I wanted to drive up commentary from users but that goal was not achieved this year. So I’ll shoot for that in the upcoming year, and maybe some Nexus-magic will help with that.

I covered a few topics this year closely: the rise of the Optimus V and the disappointment of the Triumph. My traffic spiked due to these two phones coming out of the depths of Virgin Mobile. of course, there was other important content too that found high marks. So, here we begin the top posts (via traffic) from 2011!

LG Optimus V Review

This review set me apart for a couple of weeks. CNet and other major news sites attempted to write reviews but it always seems that those are washed out and are not typical. Nobody reading blogs is average so why average your own postings? anyway, the post described many details of the new phone and why I liked it. I compared to the Intercept, that horrible excuse for a phone, the iPhone and the iPod touch. if I wrote a year-later review though, things would be different.

Java – Failed to download required installation files

Nothing is more annoying to me than restarting Windows, you know, trying to get work done, then a couple of minutes later you’re doing something important and the Java updater comes up to complain that Java 6 Update 34 is available. why can’t it be like Chrome? Update silently, in the background, and maybe let me know something changed when I launch it again in a couple of months.

Remind me again, why do I have Java installed? Crickets.

Dust Under Screen – LG Optimus V

Since this is the third highest ranked post of the year, I gather that this was a huge problem for a lot of people. Radio Shack was enough to accept the phone back when I told them it had dust under the screen, but get this – I had to pay for the phone twice. when I bought the Optimus back in February, it was priced via Virgin Mobile at $149.99 and Radio Shack had the same price. when I went back to return the phone due to dust under my Radio Shack warranty-plan, the price had gone up to $199.99 via Virgin Mobile (possibly to do popularity or constraints). Radio Shack’s deal is to give you back a gift card for the value you payed them originally, so that was about $165 (149+tax), but since the phone had gone up, I had to pay another $79 anyway to get the phone again ($199+warranty plan+tax).

PHP 5.3 – not on 1and1 Yet

I wanted to make a Symfony 2 driven CMS but I couldn’t. why? Because 1and1 fails to support the current stable version of PHP 5. PHP 5.2 has been out of favor by PHP.net for at least a year and there is still no progress. Since it’s so popular, I suspect many people want a solution to this problem.

Someone needs to make a GetPHPUpdated.org or something. That way, we can make a huge petition to get PHP on 1and1 updated, finally.

Virgin Mobile may get the LG Optimus Black

Once you get an Optimus V, you love it to death. once you have it for a few months and use it consistently, you realize it does not scale well. The Triumph was a good phone on paper, but the build quality and the horror stories drive the masses away from it. there is still hope, that the Optimus Black may come to Virgin Mobile as a secondary top-tier phone to sit alongside the Triumph. look at how many of us have that hope. please, Virgin Mobile, please, give us a phone that does not suck.

PHP 5.3.99-dev on 1and1

I haven’t looked into this since I found it in summer, but it was odd to me that there was some PHP 5.3 stuff lurking around on 1and1′s servers. Through a toggle in the administration panel, you could easily make something appear. I think since then, the version has changed to PHP 5.4-dev, but again, it means nothing. I think this means the people want PHP 5.3 if there are two entries in this list.

Check MacBook Air SSD Model

There is nothing like paying $1500 and going home only to find out your new MacBook Air is 20% slower than it could be if you had been lucky. The SSDs used in the 2011 Summer MBA models varied, some slow, some fast. This post was an appeal to just find the answer, instead of having to watch a four minute long video. how about 40-words instead?

Where is 2-Finger Swiping in Finder & OSX Lion?

So, where is it Apple? Myself and many others want to know. In Safari, the standard for navigating back and forth between webpages is intuitive and easy, just a two finger swipe left or right. In Chrome, for months now, the same has been true. In the Mac App Store, there are back and forward buttons, but the functionality is missing. In the Finder too, the buttons are present but the functionality precedent is not there. So much for consistency.

Lion Gestures in Chrome 14

In makes sense that when people were looking for other Lion gestures, they’d want some in Chrome too. Chrome’s implementation is interesting, since it does not provide previews. it just uses an arrow that gradually fades in from transparent to completely solid.

Fatal error: out of Memory – WordPress Update

Can I ask you a question? Have you ever been out of memory? Has the memory ever been out of you? Well, if so, disable your plugins. WordPress is often installed on shared hosts with severe memory limitations. That causes a lot of problems when upgrading to a new version. Or it used to when WordPress would download all new files regardless of what has changed. Since it has a manifest, it can simply updated the changed files.

This year has been great, and there has been many wonderful posts. I hope this next semester brings out as much content as this fall, but as it usually goes, I go quiet from some point forward until summer when I am off on vacation yet again.

Have a good one.

There is no allowance for radio scan. There's a bit of guess work involved. The point was that you're passionate as this respects ham radio books. There's nothing like having ham radio license at your fingertips. This is toxic however, that is the future of ham radios. I don't tend to use Radio Monitoring publicly. Your knockoff mfj ham radio options are fewer today. This is business, not personal. The radio scanning frequencies contest was a garden variety conclusion. Without considering this, quite a few counties require a person go through an approved course for vintage ham radio in this case. With all due respect, this is a final effort. What are they saying? What I do is a comprehensive review of radio frequency scanning here. Finding such a hunky dory radio scan is no simple task.
